This morning I had a productive catch-up zoom with Elmbridge CAN. This brilliant local charity works to support refugees and has so far resettled 21 refugee families in the borough.
We discussed a range of issues around the government’s asylum policy, including the progress of the Vulnerable Persons Resettlement Scheme, through which we’ve committed to welcome 20,000 refugees from the Syrian conflict into the UK. It was great to hear about the work that Elmbridge CAN has done to resettle Syrians in Elmbridge. We also covered some bureaucratic difficulties that the charity has encountered in its work, which I have been helping them with in my capacity as the constituency MP.
More broadly, I am keen to help Elmbridge CAN to feed its considerable experience and expertise into government, particularly with regard to the new global resettlement scheme that will be rolled out in the future. I’m looking forward to supporting Elmbridge CAN in discussing this issue with the Home Office.
