‘Resistance to new Labour’s systematic attack on our civil liberties found voice in several books illuminating what we have lost because of the most repressive government in recent times. Dominic Raab’s The Assault on Liberty (Fourth Estate £8.99) was the most succinct and intelligent. The author is a constitutional lawyer who helped David Davis when he resigned his seat and triggered a by-election to highlight what the government has been up to. Raab is especially good at explaining how the government’s emphasis on “rights” has been used as a distraction from its erosion of our liberty.’
